Google Cardboard is no Joke, no joke at all !!
Edit from my 1st post
You can find my first article « How to build your own cardobard » here.
Above is my first attempt to build a cardboard. From that 1st prototype, I have built a second one with two major enhancements:
- I have used a Glue Gun from the beginning helping to mount it much more easily and with a much better quality. The second one is just awesome.
- I have used a round shaped knife to mark all folds before folding, making shape much more accurate.
But the most impressive addition I have made in this V2 is the actionable button. With it, you have an operational VR headset on the nose. So happy about that! Unfortunately, directions from Google were unclear so to do it I have just glued Kitchen aluminum folio, from the little pyramid shaped cone to the upper face button of the cardboard. Cheap and easy.
Entry level use of the cardboard: available apps
I have downloaded and tested the following apps:
- Google Cardboard
Very exciting to see Google Earth on VR. Among lots of different apps this one is fully demonstrating the possibilities of our cardboard. I have been also really impressed by the VR visit of Versailles.
- Cardboard Camera
The most promising one: it allows you to shoot your surrounding and show it within the VR of the cardboard. This is a very interesting way to quickly investigate the possible usages of the cardboard. I have myself shoot several places I love in my home city of Lyon, FR.
- Cardboard Design Lab
This is no Lab. This app is a demonstration of the principles that should drive you when designing an app for VR. Interesting on many points for a new comer like me.
Since I am keen to test everything when I try to figure out what I can do with a tool, I have also tested VR video games (not convinced) and from the Google VR Website incl. Expedition.
But among all and I think one of the most obvious but still impressive use-case is to be a virtual visitor of whatever worth the case. My 2 favorite apps are PARIS VR and NY VR . Check them out as they worth it. You will discover what are the 2 most impressive cities in the World, from your chair.
What a bunch of possibilities!! Imagine that for less than 2 euros you can provide to many a VR experience: a revolutionary step when looking at the price of VR system around!
And thanks to the provided apps, one can easily set a efficient first experience. Google cardboard is no joke regarding UX and VR experience. I have been really impressed by the 3D feeling incl. the 3D space sound.
With the Cardboard Design Lab you have access to resources to go further with the VR UX. Moreover if you master UNITY, you can go deeper than I did and develop real application and experience with interactive 3D VR apps.
From a personal point of view I was really impressed by the UI of the cardboard. My 5 years old boy loved flying over the mountains and the sees. Available Apps allow you to fully explore the possibilities offered by this tool. Even if sometimes the graphics remind me a bit about old fashioned video game, it is still impressive for a 2€ system.
I will come back to you later with more feedback on how I used the Google Cardboard VR viewer, professionally and why not, personally. But it will take time as we have to develop usages and apps…
If you have yourself a cardboard please share your experience with us.
