On my shelf 2 – My updated list of Must-read Innovation & Innovation Project management books

I have spent a year reading books (loads of them actually… more than 20 books i.e. more than 1 per month) on Innovation, innovative projects management and related topics. Are some new books On My Shelf? Let’s Discover that now!!

2015 most preferred books, will they leave the Shelf??

Let’s come back shortly on the 2015 books. I had selected last year not less than 8 books to put On My Shelf.

Innovation books collectionLet’s start by the ones that will leave the shelf. The shelf is not expansive and I needed some room to welcome 2016 books. So unfortunately, Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In and Les systèmes de suggestion en révolution (idea management in revolution) will leave the shelf with (almost) no regrets.
I used so much The Lean Start-up in 2015/2016 that I couldn’t put it away. That’s still a must-read and an inspiration for all Innovation managers and start-upers. However, you will understand in the 2016 newcomers list why it left the Shelf.

I still value a lot The Standard for Portfolio Management which is really a frame for my day to day work as… portfolio manager.
Jugaad Innovation is a book that I have read twice and still have things to reread in to leverage every points that are highlighted there. Rare enough to be On the Shelf for one more year.

I really asked me if I kept The Business Model Canva and the Value Proposition Design On My Shelf. Those books really helped me to change points of views and mindsets in both my company and the companies I have worked for. For Good Services, they will stay one more year! (even as I wrote this article, I have used the Value Proposition in a workshop sooner that day…).
There is no debate about This is Service Design, one of my favourite if not My favourite book, for innovation and Service design. It will stay for years On My Shelf as if I had one book to recommend on Innovation and even if it focuses on a particular field « Service Design », it would be this one.

leadersgyideThe new book from Eric Ries, available only to his kickstarter’s backers is a mine of lessons learned, good practices and advices to enhance your corporate innovation, not only using Lean Start-up but in general. A very good 2016 book that will certainly stay On the Shelf for a while. The Leader’s guide is definitely the 2.0 Lean Start-up. If you didn’t, just read my Book review.


sprintOMG, that’s certainly also one of the book of the year regarding Workshop and creativity sessions incl. Prototyping and testing. Complementary to the Lean Start-up, it gives some very useful tips and advices. Just no word to say how it can be valued by those who helps others to innovate just as we do at INNOWEO Solution. If you didn’t, just read my Book review.


sketchinguserexperienceI have read this book in 2014, long before thinking about writing a blog… I have read it again this year as I really value the power of sketching after being a newbie (link in french) for a long time. It was really a pleasure to re-discover this book and link it with other radings such as Sprint. However I am not a fan of the associated Workbook…

20160916_211341I have read Make Space late 2015 but it really helped me during my first consulting mission (setting up an innovation space) and I really value this book. If you aim to set up an innovation / Creativity space, this book will definitely help you.

Project Management and Innovation, a strategic alliance

In that senses, Project managers are  fundamental actors of the collective leadership aiming to innovation and commercialization of new products and services. Articulating their actions along the backbone of Project management know-how, Project managers are eager to set-up this innovation culture among team and organisation that is the only way to maintain companies onto growth momentum.

Strategic orientation and budget allocations that are necessary to orientate the efforts to the most promising areas while ensuring a good alignment of all projects with strategic orientations are an open door to another key knwo-how of experienced project managers: Portfolio management

Project Management and Portfolio management, together with a strong innovatiove leadership are the main « tools » to ensure growht and wealth among all partners of an innovation project.

Your creativity room, designed

I already wrote an article about designing an innovation space. and some other about why it is important to have such a space in your enterprise.
Let’s now discover how to design such a room for YOUR experience.


Designing and shaping a creativity room is key for the success of your future workshops. At INNOWEO we have already set a couple of creativity room, in corporate, in SMEs and for a consulting firm. We share with you our best tips.

Setting your goals

Building a creativity room for the fancy and the trendy stylish fact of having one is a bit short minded. If it worth the effort, it should be designed and aligned to your own goals.
Do you have an innovation strategy with macro goals? If not one should be hardly working on it. Defining goals are a necessary step.

Your creativity room should be aligned with those goals.

Are you aiming to develop new services?Are you aiming to develop new product? not exactly the same goals but might be converging.

Some usual tips

Set the stage

  1. Colours, colours, colours
    Vision is one of the most important sense for humans so don’t just but fancy colours on the walls… Colours ill shape the state of mind of the participants of your workshops.
    Red, yellow, green, it actually doesn’t really matter. It should actually means something to you and your team. If Orange means something and have a clear meaning to your team and / or in your environment, let’s use it. However you should be able to identify a clear set of colours to paint your room. Don’t let it white and be sure you can easily pitch your choice of colours.
  2. Move, move, move
    Reconfigurable space is the key.
    Buy movable furnitures, trolleys, light chairs and tables.

    A way to establish a reconfigurable workspace is to set space divider. creativity14creativity15
    It can be specially designed space separators or DIY ones.
    But as you can see on the pic below (from the MIT Lab), don’t hesitate to buy loads of them.
  3. Sketch, sketch, sketch
    Once you have set the room at that stage, you should allow your team to sketch. Sketching is a technique that allow your team to illustrate concepts


Once you have set the room fill it with inspirational material.

  1. Books
    Bookshelf can provide lot of inspiration to your team. It can be a very simple bookshelf with little number of books to an extensive collection of inspirational ones. You can find my collection of books here, you can find other suggestion, here, here or here.

  2. Tendencies wall
    Providing the workshop participants with tendencies and inspiration is key as most of ideas come out of existing concepts.
    Reserve one of your wall to tendencies. Collect existing products, services, illustrations to inspire your participants.
    Magazines, newspapers of selected areas in your business area, but not only, to establish connections and enhance creativity. This should be up-to-date so don’t hesitate to change your tendencies material !

Oh yes we almost forgot… Don’t forget to fill the room with loads and loads of Sticky notes, the best companion of the creativity and innovation workshops.


Is a creativity room sufficient? In most cases, a creativity room is a good start. However, it is now proved that it works best when coupled to a FabLab. Prototyping allows people to better understand the concepts and speed up the innovation rate.

Post Brainstorming session survival plan

Brainstorming is somehow old fashioned and everybody knowing  Creativity and Problem Solving understand its limits . However it is still in use in lots of companies.


If Brainstorming is still alive in your company, here is a survival plan to insure good results and efficient actions!

  1. Organize the ideas
    Clustering is the most efficient  technique to avoid having lots of ideas, uncategorized, lost in the middle of their peers… Clustering ideas, identifying the patterns and the themes will definitely help to focus on emergent concept. Keep all ideas on the board, even those which have slight differences.
  2. Use the weighted vote technique
    Once you have clustered your ideas, it is important to narrow down to the best of them. The best technique we use at INNOWEO when we are facing Brainstorming sessions results is the weighted vote. Give your participants a given number of stickers (usually 3) and ask them to vote for their 3 favourite ideas. Additional rules can be defined (only one sticker per idea or 2 maximum per idea or whatever rule which you think is suited to the vote – hint: keep it simple)brainstorming_session_pan_6170
  3. Prioritize the best ideas
    Once participants have selected the best ideas, it is time for the sponsor, the facilitator and some selected key stakeholders to prioritize the ideas which have the best future.  Take each point of view into account but at the end, (hint: let the sponsor/ main stakeholder decide about the prioritization at the end, don’t try to reach a consensus).
  4. Organize next steps
    It is really important, for the project, for the brainstorming, for the participants that something goes out of the brainstorming. List all tasks that have to be performed, state a deadline, name a responsible.
    Follow the implementation plan with your key stakeholder.
    (hint: keep trace of all actions in a shared file)
  5. Document your brainstorm
    Documenting your brainstorm is key. Take pictures of the board, keep trace of each ideas per cluster and the results of votes and prioritization.
    (hint: Use the new technologies at their most. Collaborative and task management tools are the best choice)

Summer Reading Review: The Leader’s guide

leadersgyideIf you remember well other INNOWEO articles, we already spoke about this book last year.

The Leader’s guide is a kind of follow-up of The Lean Start-up, a book which made the Lean Start-up one of the most trendy innovation method around the globe.

I really enjoyed the Lean Start-up and it serves us, at INNOWEO and in the pro life of each team member to foster innovation while staying on a voluntary momentum of delivery.

Much harder to read than the previous book, The Leader’s guide is a big dive into innovation practitioners and project managers who decided to use this methodology at work.


When it comes to compare my summer readings among them, one has to consider the real savoir-faire of US writers regarding this kind of books.

Clearly, The Leader’s guide is one of the best books about Innovation management and innovation projects I have read. It is not as clear and smooth as the Lean Start-up but what a collection of feedbacks, experiences and lessons learned: worthless!

What I enjoyed in this book:

  • The first chapters of the book, esp. « A primer on the Lean Start-up methodology » are among the most interesting chapters of innovation books I have ever read,
  • Sharing by practitioners of their lessons-learned is the most valuable things of the book,
  • Start-uppers AND corporate managers (« corporaters »?) give their example, not only focusing on new economy and digital. I especially value the sharing of Janice Semper (from GE), Cindy Alvares.
  • Lots of VERY VALUABLE INFO shared by LS practitioners!
  • Excellent chapter on MVP
  • Even more excellent chapter on how GE deployed Lean Start-up

What I less enjoyed:

  • The Leader’s Guide seemed to me much more difficult to read than the Lean Start-up. However the good organisation and symbols helps you to stay in and follow the demonstration of Eric.


One of the most impressive and inspiring book on Lean Start-up. Sharing the experience and Lessons-Learned is always the most efficient way to progress faster and achieve more results.
A good thing is that this book shares lessons-learned and experiences not only from the start-up world but also from SMEs and Corporate. That’s something really interesting from people like us at INNOWEO who are sharing this knowledge and experience with our customers. I found on the book things that we are already applying and things we will test (in the Lean Start-up way) very soon.
